Who am I?
These kinds of introductions always feel a little awkward to me, who am I to promote myself? But since you don’t know me and I don’t know you, it feels fair to give you a bit of background.
So, hi! I’m Dustine. I’ve been an accountant for about 20 years. My career began in banking while I was still earning my accounting degree. After college, I took the typical route and landed a corporate job. I loved the company, but I quickly realized I wasn’t fulfilled.
What did keep me engaged was learning how the business really worked, from payroll to accounts payable to receivables and how everything flowed into the final financial reports. I also became the go-to person for figuring out what went wrong in the accounting software, helping teammates streamline their processes and fix the little things that derailed our day.
But all that hustle came at a cost. I burned out. Badly. I was exhausted, missing out on my family, and knew I had to make a change. So, right before Christmas, I walked away from corporate life….with absolutely no plan.
By January, I was climbing the walls (not literally—I'm not Spider-Man). I needed something to focus on and started brainstorming ways I could work from home while still being present with my kids, who were growing up fast. That’s when I decided to start my own business.
It started slowly, one client at a time. At first, one was enough. But growth is in my nature, and over time, one became two, then more. Today, I run a full practice that keeps me busy and fulfilled.
Over the years, I’ve seen the same patterns again and again with small business owners who are running into the same accounting pitfalls. And while there’s no shortage of advice out there, it can be overwhelming to sift through. That’s why I’ve decided to start sharing what I’ve learned: the mistakes to avoid, the tools that help, and some hard-earned tips along the way.
Small businesses truly have my heart. I want to see them thrive. And thriving doesn’t just come from delivering great products or services, it comes from knowing how to track, manage, and understand the financial side, too.
So here’s to building healthier businesses, one smart decision at a time. I hope what you find here helps make that a little easier.
